This is my 100th post!
The only idea anyone offered was to review the last few months, so I'm going with that. (cheers, Keiran!)
It has been a real roller -coaster .. from feeling aware that there was something wrong in April, and putting it all down to "stress" with planning our wedding and "long haul flights" on our honeymoon... to being only a few weeks away from the surgery now ...
May was VERY hard cos I had a lot of symptoms, and work was still relentless, as it is just before the exams start. I could hardly manage the discomfort and nuisance factor .. but I didn't want to take time off, especially when I was feeling OK for at least part of each day.
I saw my GP at the start of June and he thought it would be something like IBS ... we had no indication of me being vulnerable to any serious health issues. I'd recently had blood tests which came out really good for my age, cos of my good diet and my reasonable exercise levels ... hey ho
So we started July thinking we'd tackle IBS - we planned a "health farm" holiday, took our bikes and the massage table to France and followed a strict "be good to your belly" diet, exercise and relaxation plan for three weeks. First time I've ever come back off holiday having lost weight!
The weight was gone, the symptoms were still there.
late August I toddled back to the docs and he agreed that further investigation was necessary. I got the earliest appointment I could with Mrs Hall on the 5th Sept .. groovy birthday week.. she said she needed to have a proper look and on the 11th of Sept she did that and told me I have got cancer.
September then gets me going on the round of scans, blood tests, doctor's consultations and the discovery that the tumour is too big to operate and I've got to have a programme of I.V. chemo and then more (oral) chemo and radiation. Meanwhile fretting about what is to become of my classes this year and "my" department!
IV chemo started 21st Sept. This treatment is boring, makes me feel proper ill and the side effects carry on for several days after the three days of drips have finished ... I had two lots of this, two weeks apart.
Meanwhile, I am rushed of my feet by tides of friendly well-wishers, family visits, cards, pressies, flowers and emails from colleagues, students (past and present) brilliant friends and random ppl I've met on tinternet over the years! This has to be the best bit of the whole thing -- I've never felt so bouyed up on a sea of love and kindess as I did then, and still do .. it is so great really, a total silver lining.......
On Oct 16th I started the 6 weeks of daily radiation and oral chemo. The routine was OK and the side-effects varied through into November There were some days when I had very bad pains, and others with none. I was nauseous most of the time, but could control it with a drug. I got sore hands and feet, blisters and mouth ulcers and started most days with a headache. I needed to sleep extra most days and felt sore from the radiation from time to time.
On the up-side thre radiation staff were excellent and I had a companion with me for part of the day nearly every day. These lovely ppl have kept my spirits up, distracted me and entertained me vastly with lovely tales and juicy gossip (haha - I'm saying no more!) There were also wonderful tempting meals laid before me, and walks and short trips to keep me bright .. as well as this blog, the comments, and emails and cards and telephone calls from all over the place ... THANK-YOU
December So the first "round" is over. My immunity is at its lowest this week (10 days after chemo finishes, apparently) but from then on I should be getting stronger and ready to face the surgery in January.
I've made much of the love and support I've had from many and varied quarters since this started, but I must mention B especially. She is a complete rock, my number one star and the absolute love of my life. She has had to cope with so much during all of this. She also made extra jobs for herself, like doing double the laundry to keep us extra clean! Most importantly she kissed every single tablet I had to take five times and said a little prayer over them all at each dose. She has multiplied the effectiveness of Dr Adab's potions, I'm sure!
We've celebrated 14 years together this week, and during all that time she had gifted me her unfailing love and devotion. I'm not sure that I deserve her but I am so grateful to have her in my life.
We are always together and will always be together

its really emotional to read all that you have been through and i can feel a lump in my throat to read what you have been through since april.
i hope that you still stay strong, keep your chin up as my grandad would say and know that you are loved by hundreds of people.
Everyone from last years English class misses you so much, i dont think you realise how much of an impact you made on all of us and the ways you helped us.
now the first round is over, raise your gaurd and fight it, you will win.

Dear Fred and Pauline, ahhh, I don't know what to say, that is so sweet of you both; looking after Susan is all I want to do. I love her so much.
We're sailing through it and looking forward to Christmas with you.
PS Fred, I need to spend some time in the shed, as I'm "teaching" D+T this year .... gulp!
Hi, Poe here, not as in (the poet) or Edgar Allen. Just my nick-name.
Got reply 2day so here's a diversion on 't other 'ne.
MOTHER DOESN'T WANT A DOG
Mother doesn't want a dog.
Mother says they smell,
And never sit when you say sit,
Or even when you yell.
And when you come home late at night
And there is ice and snow,
You have to go back out because
The dumb dog has to go.
Mother doesn't want a dog,
Mother says they shed,
And always let the strangers in
And bark at friends instead,
And do disgraceful things on rugs,
And track mud on the floor,
And flop upon your bed at night
And snore their doggy snore.
Mother doesn't want a dog.
She's making a mistake.
Because, more than a dog, I think
She will not want this snake.
(author Judith Viorst)
Hope you like it.

To celebrate the 100th post, a "carry on fighting" ribbon for the brave girl!
Whether it's fate or something but my random word i have to type below is
FYTER = Fighter! Spooky
I can only guess at what number you are up to now. But if everyone who loves you gets tapping I should imagine a 100 would be easy. I for one (or three) will certainly be giving my multiple personalities their freedom to register their individual comments

Nice poem Aunty Poe - (isn't that slang for toilet though?)
I'm at work and I'm sure this must be classed as a sacking offence. It's not like I haven't given them plenty of reason to give me the push, but no. Everyone around me is picking up their p45's. Honestly. went out with Domenica, Julianne, Merry and Tracey last night. They all send their love. as do I.
Dear Susan,
Although I read your Blog most days (usually at some rediculous hour of the morning) I am not one to add comments. However, your 100th post brings out so many emotions and reminds us of so many important things - especially the value of good partners, friends, family, support and how we must all value our health.
Naturally I have known Brigid all of my life! Brigid has never been happier than since you met. You have given her such balance and support and together you are an immense strength.
We in Ireland are looking forward to your 200th post when no doubt you'll have the operation behind you and will be on the road to a full recovery.
Take care and give that sister of mine a big hug.
Lots of love Dave xx x xx (a kiss from each of the children)
Hi Widow Twanky here must watch what Im saying on the blog. The news was seen that I was having a few days off and lo and behold the hall is full of baskets of ironing.

Hi, Trace -- good to hear from you - dont forget you CAN use the old Nat hotmail address!

give all your lovely friends a kiss from me, esp Tracy! Brigid says "eh behave yourself" cos she is just over my shoulder as I type! so, that IS me behaving myself ... I hope we get to see them all over Christmas, actually, that would be lovely!

Not a dry eye in the house over here. In fact, for once, blubbering like a baby wouldn’t be an understatement. Such touching and emotional words clearly written from the heart.
I’ve read this post quite a few times now… each time starting to write a comment and then deleting it again, not happy with something about it. The 100th post is such a prominent post, and I’ve been trying to think of something significant to write.
Here’s my thinking…
The number 100 has such importance here, both as an indication of how far you’ve come and how much progress you’ve made. It will act as a marker, a point to look back at when this is all over. Similarly, as a record number of posts, it will quantify the love and support you have around you. The number 100 has so many different meanings, and so to celebrate the 100th post, I thought I’d have a look around to see what other meanings and importance the number 100 has.
Here’s a few of my finds…
100 is the number of verses in the song "99 bottles of beer on a wall"
A "jiffy" is an actual unit of time for 1/100th of a second, hence “back in a Jiffy”.
A shark can detect one part blood in approximately 100 million parts water.
Your heart beats over 100 thousand times a day.
100% represents wholeness, purity or perfection.
The Italian coin 100 lira depicts the image of Athena, a Goddess who represents courage and skill. She is also a protectress of the arts.
100 degrees Celsius is the boiling temperature of pure water at sea level.
Obadiah saved 100 prophets by hiding them in a cave and feeding them. (I Kings 18.4)
Support and love with you all the way.
Congrats on your 100th post! What a year you've had but it is so good to see you so happy and full of love! As Kieron said in his first post ....
"i dont think you realise how much of an impact you made on all of us and the ways you helped us"
well that goes for all of us old students as well - you're still having a massive influence on us and we are wishing you all the very best x
(blimey it's 13 years since i left sixth form!! i am getting v old!)
Dad, All in a days work - I know how much S luuuuuuuurves to gossip!
S - I tried to colour the ribbon pink but I am not allowed to use the HTML tag "font" hmmm
I have changed my image for B. It's my alter ego humping a deer - who, for it's sins seems to be enjoying it?
Well it put a smile on my face ;)
x
J
My dear boy - I'm not sure that B is going to find that picture any more alluring than the last one! *tsk*

I have been pruning the roses the last couple of days. I first bought this new home just before your wedding and now I am getting ready for my first winter here.
Thinking about you two darlings and how much I will enjoy having you over in the spring to see the woods greening up and the roses coming into bud.

Hi Suze
Congratulations on your 100th post. Here's the song me and Kasia sang at your wedding:
Sto lat, sto lat,
Niech żyje, żyje nam.
Sto lat, sto lat,
Niech żyje, żyje nam,
Jeszcze raz, jeszcze raz, niech żyje, żyje nam,
Niech żyje nam!
The first line means "100 years, 100 years" I'll translate the rest if we get to 100 comments!
Love to you and Brig xxx
Matt
hi matt and kasia -- thanks for the reminder of your singing ... We'll see you tomorrow, but sadly we can't watch the match cos we CANCELLED our SKY subscription .. good job since there's "been no football" this season -- apart from tonight when Charlton scooped a winner -- yay!
@ mistry dad -- LOL -- I thought you might not know about that pool attached to our cottage ... don't worry - we wont throw you in!
@ liz -- hey, looking forward to seeing you on thursday .. perhaps I'll cook for a change! Mr Ka has just thrown down another seleb-chef gauntlet with chicken breasts stuffed with pesto and lovely vegetables .. yumm!
Just thought I'd join in the "comment drive" ...congratulations on 100 posts, hopefully it will be the hundredth of many because I know lots of your readers love you and your blog very much...myself included! :-D

Goodness, you've already got 34 comments.
Right, well my bit of news is that I have just this minute taken a call from the Hilton in MAnchester and booked us a table (its only a bar, no food) in Cloud 23 for 5.00 pm on Sunday 17th December. it turned out they'd given me the wrong numer but the woman I spoke to was really excellent.
So, whatever happens this week, next week we'll all be living it up 23 floors above Manchester.
Love you loads x x x x x x Manc

I'm in Germany until next October, but I'm allowed to leave occasionally :) I was back last weekend for my PhD viva, and I'll be back again at Christmas! I miss things like pubs and Stilton too much to stay for ever...
Greg xx
Ohh - yes forgot to say "well done" DOCTOR GREG PhD .. B reckons you'll be kept busy over Xmas judging by all the optical fibre trees that are all over the abbey (in fact -- forgive her, she actually said LASER trees - which made it even funnier!!)
@ jean -- ah you saw through my cunning plan! haha -- indeed James has sent me 20 one word comments that I have in reserve if we get close!
@ mand - forgot to say "well done" on presevering with the 23-cloud club .. it is certainly something to look forward to, and I've written to the bank to extend out mortgage! I'll talk to you later re detail, as James is having us at his house on the 16th .. so we may have the 23 thing as the end of the day rather than the start, if you can do it that way?
Sue - hope today goes well. Can I send 20 one liners as back up because I'm missing YOUR daily thoughts. LOL Aunty B.
Thinking about you both all day. Love Julie xxxxxxx
Those optical fibre trees are really useful when I'm trying to explain to people what I do! If all else fails at least I can get a job selling xmas stuff :)
Greg xx
P.S. You didn't have to tell everyone!
OK Jean - just for you.
What's got 8 legs and 4 ears?

Have just returned from taking Joe swimming. When we came out of the pool we went to the police station to see if the £100 that he'd previously handed in had been claimed. Great news is that Joe is now £100 richer. Or as he's planning on sharing it with Toby they are both £50 richer.I thought that as we'd told a considerable number of people here and there about the whole weird situation that the chances of it still being there were slim. But lucky us. Julie
Not only *had* you replied to my last email yesterday .. but you'd sent it twice! haha Gave me somethign to do other than work this morning anyways!
Have just read your latest email and I think I will wait till work tomorrow to answer it ... well I aint got much to do tomorrow ! lol

@ toby mistry brother - it was great talking to you tonight, and I am counting down the days to coming down to see you!
The tip about the Argos catalogue is wasted on me, cos I've already got your pressie wrapped up - but maybe someone else reading this needs to know the exact page reference fro your present of choice!
@ julie that is great news the cash was still there for the boys -- I guess they'll get their mistry mum and dad a nice mistry pressie for christmas then!
@ trace, bring it on my dear!
Hi Sue just adding to the 100 blogy, took out the baskets with J gosh its a wonder the washing didnt blow away.

suze, you will never get to 100 posts this way! You need to respond to each comment individually!!!!
Hello Stoke Folk,
Coventry calling.
Not long until our totally overdue family reunion. I doubted it would ever happen, and that was the problem. Then we all decided it HAD to happen, so now it will. Excellent. Peace at last.
Positive thinking, apparently it works. Sometimes we just have to take control of a situation. But you know all about that.
Hope the pictures from the scan are beautiful.
See you both soon
Mark xx
Hi again,
seems everyone is sending numerous comments, so here is another from me. The 'Sto Lat' traditional Polish song caught my eye because I have read all the Terry Pratchett Discworld books. On Discworld Sto Lat is a place name,(so is Sto Kerrig and Sto Helit, all on the Sto Plains).
There is also a character who is Death's granddaughter. She is an amazing teacher, very capable, also fearless, and her name is Susan. Susan Sto Helit, aka Susan Death. Which in the books is nothing to be alarmed at. Not that she reminds me of anybody, even remotely, of course.
Incidentally, Wikipedia do a translation of the Polish song, if anybody else can't wait.
love as ever
Mark xxx
Jean, you have me in stitches!!! I love your posts!!

erm this is all a bit cheeky about my eating habits
you lot better watch out -- and I can hereby reveal that jean's idea of a little snack is a 200g bar of cadburys dairy milk
Suze, this blog is wonderful and has helped me deal with ill health within my family. You are an inspiration. Keep that strength going and for goodness sake don't start going to the gym! Lift some tins of beans while you watch the t.v., walk with bags of sugar taped to your ankles! If you need an injury Therapist after all that.... give me a shout!
Keep smiling :D
Vicky x
@ jean - LOL -
@ vicky - good of you to comment, thanks! and it sounds like you've got some skills that jean and I could use - your exercise advice is excellent in itself
Sue I may try Vickis sugar lift or was it bean swing anyway we may end up with a few broken windows. Bye for now L M xxxxx
LOL @ jean - B gave up football for similar reasons, she was sure that the poorly trained play-mates were likely to break her leg, and she didn't fancy that ...
I forgot is was snow boarding tat did your knees in -- will sand boarding be much the same? (and carry the same risks!)
@ mum - please dont try this at home! or vicky's bean tin tip either!
I think we need the link to the website wher you found out you could play about on the highest sand dunes in the world ..

I have spent the last 12 hours feeling sick, and my awe at your capacity to ride these sensations on a daily basis without slithering in to self-pity has had yet another boost. I love you both.
suzi, you are an awesome teacher....see we both managed to put a comment on your blog. You are an inspiration and I hope you can feel the LOVE and support being sent to you, in sisterhood

hey Ju - you're not pregnant are you? what's making you feel queasy .. ?
One thing that stops me doing self-pity is the feeling that there will be worse to come so I may as well save the gloom till then .. and in any case the nausea has stopped now the chemo has stopped :)
I'm in very high spirits today .. going to the gym hasa very good effect ...
You are such an inspiration, suze and I really hope I get to meet the wonderful B some time soon (again, like... heh.)
Lots of love and positive thoughts to you both!

Dear Susan, just a little note to say it was good to talk to you this morning, and to hear you sounding so jubilant and pleasd with yourself,as you should be,as one of your friends on here have said you are an insparatipon as to how to face a situation ,of the kind you have.positive thinking/
belief in your self to be strong and only think
positively things about
your problem ,no room for anything else.

Wow!!
How inspirational it has been to see just how well our Suzi has coped with all the challenges she has faced over the last few months.
We always knew that she was a strong and resiliant (toughy) Tofty - doesn't she just prove it.
A massive thank-you to you all for all the encouragement love and support you have given her. It is just lovely knowing that you are always there for us.
With love and thanks
